Examples of domain names:

www.google.com
www.bbc.co.uk
www.5fm.co.za

Think of your domain name as your Internet telephone number. It is the name you will advertise. It is what people will type when they want to visit your web site.

A good domain name is:

  • Short
  • Easy to remember
  • Descriptive
  • Unique
  • "Catchy"
  • Non-cryptic

Think of telling a colleague about your web site over the phone. You should be able to say the name without having to spell it out.
www.tychbizz.com is not good.
www.bluedoor.com is good.

You'll notice that I placed no spaces in the names. There can be none, but you can use a dash as in www.best-used-books.com to seperate words. It's not recommended though, because if your customer leaves the dashes out she'll end up on someone else's site. If you register the name with the dashes, they have to be there.

Think of variations. For example www.bestbooks.com, www.thebestbooks.com, www.megabooks.com etc.

Choose at least 3 names, because there's a good chance that someone already thought of (and registered) your first choice.

The difference between .com, .net, .org and .co.za

You can register any of these. The first three, .com, .net and .org are international domains. You probably already know that .com is the best known and regarded as the most prestigious. If you're thinking of a business site and selling to an international audience, a .com highly recommended.

If your business is limited to South Africa, you can go for a .co.za, but it is more expensive than a .com and is not as flexible. The only real advantage of a .co.za is that people looking for South African sites specifically will usually visit the .co.za site before visiting a .com

The other two, .net and .org, are mostly used for non-commercial sites.
