How search engine optimization works
How did you find this web site? I'm guessing you went to a search engine like Google or the South African engine Ananzi and typed something like "web site designers" or South African web site designers". If you found this page on a search engine, you probably typed "search engines" or "search engine optimization".
Let's look at this page. It was optimized for the term "search engines". Look at the red bar right at the top. The word "search engines" is the first word on the page. The singular form also appears in the red heading at the top and the term is repeated several times in the body text. When a search engine sees all of this, it considers this page very relevant to a search for "search engines" and will rank it highly in the search results.
Then there are things like the page title, keywords tags and description tags (and quite a few other tricks). All of this is done so people find us. When we optimize your site, we do the same, but for the keywords that your potential customer are likely to enter.
How we know what words your customer will enter
This is where it gets interesting.
We recently paid $ 495 for the rights to access and reproduce very detailed search engine keyword statistics. We can basically see what people are searching for. This very expensive tool is one of three that we use to "spy" on search engines.
Here is a very rough outline of the optimization process:
- We look at the information you submit for your site and send you a list of keywords.
- We also send you a "gateway chart", which will simply tell you which keywords to use on which pages.
- Using our guidelines, you then rewrite your entire site to improve its keyword density.
- When you're done, it's our turn to rewrite, this time with all the buttons and usibility features the Net offers.
- After that, we submit it for your approval before it is uploaded to the Net and submitted (by hand) to about 50 search engines.
- From that point on, we'll do a monthly check to see how your site is doing on the search engines and add tweaks to it to improve its position.
- You'll receive a monthly report on where your site ranks and changes we've made to it since the last report.
How much search engine optimization costs
We charge you per page per month. The price depends heavily on the type of information and the length of the pages, but on average we are looking at less than R 145 per page per month.
